At a Glance:

Phase I of renovations at the East Kentwood Freshman Campus was completed in August 2022 as part of a $1.4 million K-12 school renovation project designed to improve circulation, safety, and learning environments. The overall project was strategically divided into two phases, with Phase I focusing on structural improvements, second-floor renovations, and enhanced building security.

A key component of this phase was the addition of two new staircases, significantly improving access to the second level and supporting better student flow throughout the building. As a result of these layout modifications, fire-rated doorways were installed on the second floor to ensure full compliance with building and fire safety codes. At the base of the new staircases, a commons area was created, providing a flexible gathering space for students and staff, complete with new furniture to support collaboration and daily use.

Phase I also included cosmetic renovations to second-floor classrooms and corridors, enhancing the overall learning environment. Upgrades featured new carpet flooring, fresh interior paint, and updated classroom furniture, delivering a modern and cohesive aesthetic throughout the space.

In addition, a new school security office was constructed by converting an existing storage area along the main corridor. This improvement strengthens building monitoring and access control, aligning with best practices in K-12 school safety and security design.

Phase II of the project, which will focus on main-level classroom and corridor renovations, is scheduled to begin in June 2023, continuing the transformation of the facility.
