At a Glance:

Kentwood Public Schools completed a targeted HVAC upgrade and building improvement project at Valleywood Middle School, focused on providing consistent air conditioning across classrooms and administrative offices. Originally constructed in the 1970s and expanded over time, the building presented unique challenges in achieving uniform climate control throughout the facility.

To support this goal, the project included a combination of HVAC system upgrades, window replacement, and door improvements to enhance both performance and building efficiency. Existing windows along the east and west elevations were removed and replaced with new commercial-grade aluminum storefront windows, improving durability, energy efficiency, and natural light. Additional upgrades included the installation of new exterior doors on the south side of the building, along with select interior door replacements throughout the facility.

Mechanical improvements were a key component of the project. Selective demolition was completed to remove existing horizontal unit ventilators (HUVs), along with associated masonry modifications to accommodate the installation of new vertical unit ventilators (VUVs) in each classroom and office space. The new HVAC equipment was carefully selected to align with previously installed systems, ensuring consistency and long-term maintainability across the building.

This project demonstrates a strategic approach to K-12 school HVAC upgrades, addressing the complexities of an aging and expanded facility while delivering improved comfort, efficiency, and performance for students and staff.
