At a Glance:

The East Kentwood Freshman Campus, part of the Kentwood Public Schools district, completed a comprehensive cafeteria renovation and modernization project between 2020 and fall 2021. This K-12 school renovation transformed the existing dining space into a bright, flexible, and technology-enabled environment designed to support both daily student use and school events.

The renovation included a full overhaul of the ceiling system, with the removal and replacement of the existing ceiling, lighting grid, and acoustic sound baffles. These upgrades improved both lighting quality and acoustics, enhancing the overall functionality of the space. Interior finishes were also refreshed, including new white wall paint to create a clean, open, and inviting atmosphere.

To better support student needs, the cafeteria was outfitted with a variety of modern seating options, including traditional tables, booth seating, and high-top tables with stools overlooking exterior windows. Recognizing the importance of technology in today’s learning environment, integrated power outlets were installed throughout the seating areas, allowing students to conveniently charge devices during lunch and collaborative time.

Beyond daily use, the space was designed as a multi-purpose school environment capable of hosting evening events, presentations, and performances. A new sound system was installed, and the stage was fully remodeled with updated technology to support audio-visual presentations and school programming.

As part of the next phase of improvements, the project will include the addition of two new staircases, providing more accessible and efficient entry to the cafeteria from the second floor. These areas will also feature soft seating and collaborative spaces, along with additional power access for students, faculty, and visitors.

This project highlights a forward-thinking approach to school cafeteria renovation and student-centered design, combining modern finishes, flexible seating, and integrated technology to support a dynamic educational environment.
