At a Glance:

To accommodate increased enrollment in 2019, Kentwood Public Schools completed a major K-12 school expansion project at Explorer Elementary School, adding two new classroom wings totaling eight classrooms. This elementary school addition was designed to increase capacity while maintaining consistency with the existing building and enhancing the overall campus environment.

The project began with extensive sitework and infrastructure improvements, including the expansion of the existing parking lot and parent drop-off/pick-up lanes to improve traffic flow and safety during peak times. As part of the site development, the retention pond was enlarged, and additional safety fencing was installed to protect students. New playground equipment was also added to support the growing student population and provide updated outdoor recreation space.

The classroom additions were constructed using CMU block with brick veneer and metal pitched trusses supporting a durable metal roof, all designed to match the architectural style of the existing school. Each classroom was designed with large windows to maximize natural light, creating a bright and engaging learning environment.

Interior features include state-of-the-art educational technology, custom casework, and modern classroom furniture, ensuring that the new spaces support both teaching and student success. This project highlights a comprehensive approach to elementary school construction, combining building additions, site improvements, and modern learning environments to meet the evolving needs of the district.
