In 2024, we completed a full-service kitchen addition at Challenger Elementary School, enhancing on-site meal preparation and improving the overall school food service operation. This K-12 construction project was designed to transition the facility from a limited serving model to a fully functional commercial school kitchen.

Because construction took place during the active school year, a temporary modified serving area was established, and prepared meals were brought in to ensure uninterrupted food service. This approach allowed students to continue receiving daily meals while construction progressed safely and efficiently.

The new kitchen addition features state-of-the-art stainless steel appliances, including dedicated food preparation stations, wash stations, ovens, and cooktops, along with a walk-in freezer and refrigerator to support full-scale meal production. The serving area was designed with polished concrete flooring for durability and ease of maintenance, complemented by vertical wall tile that reflects the district’s Kentwood red and black color palette.

To enhance the dining environment, new storefront windows were installed along the gym/cafeteria, bringing in additional natural light and creating a brighter, more inviting space for students and staff.

Completed at the end of 2024, this project highlights a strategic investment in school kitchen construction and cafeteria upgrades, delivering a modern, efficient, and high-performing food service facility.
